Smarter Movement
Learning a new movement is like learning a new language for the brain. It is truly that powerful. Although this has been known and practiced by many cultures for centuries there has been an increasing awareness over the last decade about the importance of stimulating the brain, as we get older. This is to ward off age related decline and disease. Let's face it, who wants to get old? Or rather, how can you stay young? There are now many apps out there that are designed to stimulate the brain, create new brain cells and neural pathways. Learning a new language will do the same thing to your brain while also make travelling to foreign countries a little easier. So if you can this by using an app or learning to speak French why bother moving? Let's see...
Complex movements stimulate the following...
The brain
The vestibular system (inner ear)
Nervous system (both parasympathetic and sympathetic)
Muscular system
Fascial system
Ligamentous system
Heart
Lungs
Vascular network
Endocrine (hormonal) system
Digestive system
While this list is getting pretty long the brain games that you use on your phone are still just stimulating the brain. Get my point? There is so much more you can do for your whole body by making smarter movement choices. The types of movement I'm talking about include...
Weight lifting (Olympic variations)
Gymnastics
Hand balancing
Martial arts
Tricking
Dance
Yoga
Parkour
Calisthenics
Acrobatics
Tumbling
Trampoline
Tai chi
Rock climbing
Surfing
Skiing/snow boarding
Skate boarding
All these movement modalities require your to learn skill, control and discipline to begin and then make progressions from there. Often progressions are endless, especially when you undertake learning these skills as an adult. This allows for constant stimulation as you go on your journey to becoming a better mover.
