Why Movement?

We have some fairly basic needs in life when you whittle it all down. Maslow got it down to the following…self-esteem, self-actualisation, physiological, safety, and love. Out of those physiological needs are of the highest importance as we need air, water, food, sex (for continuance of the species) and shelter from the elements to survive. We rely on movement to perform all of these needs and to survive. Even breathing relies on the movement of the diaphragm and other respiratory muscles to inhale and exhale. So we could argue that movement is actually our greatest need!

Our brains developed first to move as a method of survival. To find food, water, shelter and also escape physical harm or death. Only after this did we develop the ability to make conscious decisions, be emotive and express ourselves. Most thoughts and emotions are actually representations of movement, postures and poses. Think about times when you are in conversation how much hand and body movements you perform to illustrate your point of view. This is not just coincidence; you are telling your story with movement first and your words second.

The main mission of Ministry of Movement is to restore movement into peoples lives on a daily basis to improve quality of life. It is complex, quality and thoughtful movements (not 45 minutes spent on the cross trainer) that stimulate the brain, nervous and muscular systems. By stimulating the brain and the body, you can positively influence many of the body's internal systems, which in turn promote good health.

The Ministry of Movement has begun. If you are in or around Wellington and you're keen to change the way you move get in touch.

"I love seeing the changes in people after many hours of effort to achieve goals they sometimes didn't think they could ever reach."
